Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) is a high-value, functional product in the steel production chain, obtained through the direct reduction of iron ore. In the advanced MIDREX® DRI Technology, iron ore pellets are reduced in a vertical shaft furnace using natural gas that has been converted—via a catalyst—into reducing gases (such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen) at a temperature of approximately 900°C. This process results in the production of high-purity sponge iron (around 85% pure iron).
This sponge iron can be marketed in three different forms:
- Cold DRI (Direct Reduced Iron)
- Hot DRI
- Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI)
What Makes HBI Different?
When the steelmaking unit is located adjacent to the direct reduction plant, hot DRI (at approximately 550°C) can be fed directly into the furnace, significantly reducing energy consumption.
However, the main challenge arises when sponge iron needs to be transported over long distances or exported internationally. In its raw form (powder or pellet), sponge iron is highly susceptible to oxidation and even self-ignition during transport, often requiring inert gas environments for safe handling.

What is HBI and What Are Its Features?
HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron) is produced by compressing hot sponge iron at temperatures above 650°C. This results in high-density briquettes (greater than 5 g/cm³) with a uniform pillow-like shape.
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), HBI must meet the following criteria:
- Compression at temperatures above 650 °C
- Physical density exceeding 5.0 g/cm³
- High safety during handling and storage
- Optimal performance in steel melting processes
